I woke up this morning hoping to talk about the highlights from Tuskegee University’s annual homecoming—a celebration that’s usually filled with school pride, laughter, and the joy of alumni and students reuniting. But today, I find myself reflecting on a tragedy that struck our community, one that has left us all shocked, heartbroken, and searching for answers.

Homecoming is meant to be a special time, a moment when people from all over come together to celebrate Tuskegee’s rich history and shared memories. This year’s homecoming, though, turned out to be something no one could’ve imagined. What was supposed to be a joyous event took a dark turn, leaving one person dead and several others injured after a violent shooting broke out.
When I first heard the news, I couldn’t believe it. It’s hard to accept that a place known for unity and history could suddenly become the center of such chaos. For those of us who know and love Tuskegee University, this place isn’t just a school. It’s part of our community, a symbol of strength, and a reminder of the sacrifices made to create a space where Black students could learn and thrive. But now, that same place feels tainted by fear and sorrow.
People close to the incident reported that the crowd went from cheers and celebration to panic and terror in seconds. Shots rang out, and instead of smiles and laughter, there was screaming and crying. Imagine being there, surrounded by friends, only to suddenly find yourself running for safety, unsure of what’s happening or who might be hurt. It’s a nightmare I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
Tuskegee’s police and other emergency responders arrived quickly, but the damage was already done. One life was lost—a person who probably came to celebrate like everyone else, never expecting their life would end so abruptly. For those who were injured, the road to recovery will be both physical and emotional. When events like this happen, they leave scars that go beyond the physical. The shock, the fear, and the trauma stay with those involved, reshaping how they view their community and their sense of safety.
So, what now? As a community, we have to rally together, support those who were affected, and look for ways to prevent something like this from happening again. We’re left with questions—why did this happen? How could we have stopped it? And perhaps, most importantly, what can we do to ensure that future events like homecoming remain safe for everyone? We owe it to ourselves, to our loved ones, and to the memory of those who’ve been lost, to find solutions and rebuild the trust and sense of security that this tragedy has shaken.
Tuskegee University’s homecoming will never be the same for those who lived through this horror. But as a community, we must honor the memory of the person we lost by coming together, rebuilding, and making sure our university remains a symbol of pride, not pain. There’s a long road ahead, but if we come together with compassion and resilience, we can heal and honor our beloved Tuskegee’s legacy. This tragedy may have shaken us, but it won’t define us.
