I remember the feeling well. We were all stuck at home, following the rules, keeping our distance, and staying safe. At least, that’s what we were told to do by the people in charge. They were the ones preaching about how important it was to stop the spread of Covid-19. One of those voices was a leader in New York City—someone we trusted, someone we believed was leading by example. But now, the truth is out. While we were isolating, he was out having fun.

You probably know who I’m talking about—New York City’s former Covid Czar, a man who was at the forefront of managing the city’s response during the pandemic. We followed his every word, his warnings about how dangerous Covid was and how necessary it was to stay away from each other. But behind the scenes, it was a different story. While we were stuck inside, missing friends and family, he was out partying.
Can you imagine? The same person who told us to avoid social gatherings, stay six feet apart, and keep our masks on at all times was having a good time with friends, ignoring the rules he set for the rest of us. It’s hard not to feel angry, especially when we think of how much we sacrificed. Birthdays, holidays, weddings—everything was put on hold. And now, we find out that the one leading the charge against Covid wasn’t even following his own advice.
The event that really brought this hypocrisy to light was a private party he attended, right in the middle of the pandemic. It wasn’t a small, masked gathering either. No, there were people there, and the social distancing guidelines were thrown out the window. Imagine that. All those days we spent inside, thinking it was for the greater good, while he was out living like the pandemic didn’t apply to him.
What’s worse is how it makes us question everything. If the guy in charge wasn’t following the rules, why were we? How many other officials were secretly ignoring the guidelines while we were locked in our homes? It feels like a betrayal, like we were fooled into thinking everyone was in this together. But clearly, that wasn’t the case.
We’re not saying this because we think people shouldn’t have had fun. Everyone wanted life to go back to normal. But it’s about fairness. If the rules applied to us, they should have applied to everyone, especially those making the rules. It’s the double standard that stings. While families struggled to make ends meet, lost loved ones, or spent months in isolation, those in power were out enjoying themselves.
Now, as more people hear about this, the backlash is growing. People are questioning the decisions made during the pandemic. If the rules were so important, how could someone in such a high position disregard them so easily? The former Covid Czar hasn’t given much of an explanation either. There’s been no apology, just silence. But that silence speaks volumes, doesn’t it?
This whole situation makes you wonder about the people we trust to lead us, especially during tough times. We’re told to follow their instructions, to believe they have our best interests at heart. But when they break their own rules, it’s hard to trust them again. What other secrets were kept from us during the pandemic?
It’s a bitter pill to swallow, realizing that while we were doing everything we could to protect ourselves and our loved ones, those at the top may have been playing by different rules. And that’s not something any of us will forget soon.
